From Shadow Work:
I went into the kitchen, looked at the label on the bottle and raised my eyebrows. I pulled the cork, poured two glasses and took them into the bedroom where Linda was now perched on the side of the bed wearing a periwinkle bath towel. I sat down in a chair across from her that had a pair of jeans draped over the back, put my feet up on the bed next to her, and took a sip of wine.

"You have superior taste in wine, women, and song," I said. "Especially women."

"I came over early and worked on the back yard a little. I like working outside. I was wandering around pulling weeds and I stepped in a gopher hole and twisted my ankle. It hurts like a son of a bitch."

I slid out of the chair onto my knees to examine the delicate bones of her ankle. There was a slight swelling but it didn't look too serious. I found some Tiger Balm in the bathroom and returned to massage it into her skin.

"While you're on your knees I might as well tell you that my parents want us to go with them to Midnight Mass with Robert and his wife on Christmas Eve. I guess Robert and Carol are going to try to make a go of it, despite the fact that they seem to hate each others guts ninety-nine percent of the time."

I thought about Robert with his bottle of tequila staring into the deep end of the swimming pool. I was glad that I wasn't the one responsible for untying his knots every night.

"What did you tell them?" I worked the balm into her smooth skin for a few minutes, then pulled myself back up into the chair to retrieve my wine.

She laughed. "I told them we were sorry but we just wouldn't be able to make it to church with them this year."

"Hallelujah." I motioned to her ankle. "Do you feel better now?"

"Yes, but you're not finished," she said.

I got back down on my knees.

Shadow Work is smart, thoughtful, and funny, filled with characters you'll want to know better.

Haworth Press, 2006
"...a wonderful slice of daily life in Southern California in the 21st century, with political bloggers, right-wing Christians, and credit card-addicted lesbians...reads like a long, realistic installment of Dykes to Watch Out For, with all the sharp observation and political acumen, only fewer jokes. And that's high praise."
